Jacob (Jaap) Korevaar has died, aged 102, in the Netherlands. He was a faculty member in our department from 1953 to 1964. He served as Chairman of the Program in Applied Mathematics and Engineering Physics from 1956–61 and Associate (and/or Acting) Chairman, Dept of Mathematics, 1962–64. He had 17 Ph.D. students. Korevaar’s research broadly fell into the areas of complex analysis and approximation theory.
He was awarded several honors, including being made a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012, Lester R.
Ford Prize (1987) and Chauvenet Prize (1989) from MAA, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 1960, and held several roles in the Royal Netherlands’ Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) concluding with a chairmanship of the mathematical section from 1994 to 1996.
