New graduate students arriving next fall with prestigious fellowships

Timothy Cheek, who is currently studying at the University of Michigan receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s concurrently, has been awarded a prestigious NSF graduate fellowship. Timothy is broadly interested in number theory and algebraic geometry, with his previous research focusing on automorphic forms and point counting on elliptic surfaces. At the University of Wisconsin, Timothy envisions focusing on arithmetic statistics, although he still wishes to further explore arithmetic geometry more generally. The NSF GRFP, awarded to those demonstrating high potential for significant research achievement, will provide him with three years of funding to dedicate significantly to his research. Congratulations, Timothy, and we look forward to seeing you in Madison in the Fall!

Cecily Bartsch, currently a master’s student at Loyola University Chicago, has been awarded a prestigious DoD NDSEG Fellowship supported by the Army Research Office.  The DoD NDSEG Fellowship is a merit-based award that supports graduate study in STEM fields relevant to national defense. In mathematics, there are typically around six awards granted nationwide each year, and they provide full tuition and a stipend for up to three years.  Cecily has focused her research and coursework on analysis, and intends to continue working in this area at UW–Madison.  Congratulations, Cecily, and we look forward to seeing you in Madison in the Fall!
