For students planning to graduate this Spring 2024 semester, follow the steps below.
- Indicate your intent to graduate – You will indicate your intent to graduate through your Student Center by March 29, 2024. Visit the Student Center’s instruction page.
- Inform the department that you are leaving the program by completing the Departure Form.
- (only if you plan to attend commencement) Rent your cap and gown by March 31, 2024 – More information on ordering your cap and gown is available here.
- Request your warrant (by April 19, 2024)– Forms are available online. Once it has been completely filled out and signed by your advisor, please submit it to the online form.
- Follow the Graduate School’s Guides for Completing Degrees:
Master’s degree deadline is May 10, 2024. - Attend department graduation celebration on May 10, 2023, 2:00 – 4:00 pm.

- Add/update address for diploma mailing. International students must provide a diploma address in order for your diploma to be mailed. Domestic students need to provide a diploma address if you want your diploma mailed to an address different than your home address. Tutorial
- (optional) If you need documentation of your degree before you receive your diploma, request a Degree Completion Letter. Be sure to follow the instructions for graduate students.
This section is only for International students who have been admitted to another academic program in the U.S.
Change of Level
If you have been admitted to a Ph.D. program at UW-Madison, you will need to submit a Change of Level request through Terra Dotta to update your I20 from Master’s program to the Doctoral program. You can submit your request as early as you are admitted. ISS office will wait until your finish your master’s degree, early May, to process your request and issue you a new I20 with new program information.

Transfer Out SEVIS
If you have been admitted to another university in the U.S., you will need to transfer your SEVIS ID to your new school. Please follow the instructions provided by ISS to complete the process.
