MATH 171/217 sequence will no longer be offered after the Spring 2025 semester. MATH 217 will last be offered Spring 2025. Students currently enrolled in MATH 171 are encouraged to take MATH 217 in Spring 2025.
Math has developed recommendations for students who are not able to complete the full 171-217 sequence. Students are encouraged to reach out to Math at placement@math.wisc.edu to discuss their individual progress and goals.
- Students who enrolled in MATH 171 Fall 2024 but did not earn credit (withdrew or failed): These students should enroll in another math course based on their placement test scores (MATH 112, 113 or 114) since they cannot enroll in MATH 217. Students who have not yet retaken the placement test may consider doing so.
- Students who completed MATH 171 but are not able to enroll in MATH 217 in Spring 2025 (because of scheduling or other issues): These students will be given permission to enroll in MATH 113. Students who would like more algebra preparation and have adequate placement scores may consider enrolling in MATH 114. If a student is interested in taking MATH 113, 114, or 221 through another institution, we encourage them to use Transferology to verify the course will transfer.
- Students who enroll in MATH 217 in Spring 2025 but do not earn credit (withdraw or receive an F): Talk to a Math advisor by contacting placement@math.wisc.edu. Math advisors will work with students to enroll in the appropriate math course, which will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
