Before reading on, please take note of a few things to keep in mind, depending on what student population you are in:
UW-Madison Undergraduates
Degree-seeking undergraduates at UW-Madison are expected to abide by the same enrollment rules and guidelines as usual.
Unless in exceptional cases regarding transfer credit, we will not be making exceptions to course prerequisites.
Graduate Students
Graduate students are welcome to enroll in undergraduate-level courses. To gain access to any course that you currently cannot enroll in, please email placement@math.wisc.edu to request enrollment permission.
It’s also suggested that you check in with your graduate advisor/coordinator to determine which math courses, if any, are best for you in your particular situation.
Special Students
In addition to the information listed below, special students should also review our special student page, which has more information on requesting enrollment into courses and things to keep in mind.

What are the differences between summer and fall/spring enrollment?
Not much! The only major differences have to do with enrollment dates and deadlines, and degree-seeking UW-Madison students should pay particular attention to the credit load restrictions for summer.
If you need a refresher on how to enroll, the Office of the Registrar maintains a catalog of enrollment tutorials.
I want to take a course in the fall, but I'm taking the prerequisite in the summer. Will this cause any issues with my fall enrollment?
It shouldn’t. For instance, if you are taking MATH 221 in the summer and would like to take MATH 222 in the fall, you would be able to enroll in MATH 222 if you’ve already enrolled in MATH 221. The enrollment system will make the assumption that you’ll take and complete the summer course. If you do run into any issues along these lines, please review the department permissions contact page for enrollment help by subject.
Special students should refer to the special student page for more information on prerequisites and enrollment.
My math course has scheduled times and dates, but it's online. What does that mean?
These courses are online but have synchronous instruction. Similar to an in-person course, these are times in which students would have to be available online to meet with their classmates/instructor/TA. Students are expected to participate in the course given the scheduled times provided. Students should not be signing up for overlapping courses.
I'd like to get some help in my math course. What tutoring resources are available?
The Math Learning Center (MLC) will be providing tutoring for the 100-, 200-, and 300-level math courses for Summer 2022. Other services for the other math courses may be offered based on tutor availability. More information will be updated here and on the MLC page before summer.
Is there financial aid available for summer courses?
Yes! The UW-Madison Summer Term program offers an exceptional amount of financial aid to students wishing to take summer courses. More information is available on their website.
I'd like to request a recent syllabus for a course being taught this summer. How can I get a copy?
Please email placement@math.wisc.edu to request a recent syllabus for a course you’d like to enroll in. Note that syllabi will be from a recent semester/term, as upcoming summer syllabi may not be available at the time of your request.
I still have more questions. Who do I talk to?
Great question. There are a few different people and offices that you can talk to based on your needs. A good place to start is with your academic advisor, particularly if you’re wanting to talk about course scheduling, planning, etc. as they relate to your area of study/interest.
If you’re having enrollment issues with math courses or would like to talk about math course selection, you can reach out to placement@math.wisc.edu and ask your question or explain your situation.
If you are a student that is visiting from another institution, please see our dedicated pages for special students.
